Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe Ignores Power-Sharing Deal, Appoints Ministers to Key Cabinet Posts

Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe has apparently turned his back on a power-sharing deal forged between his ZANU-PF party and main opposition Movement for Democratic Change leaders by appointing member so his party to key cabinet positions.

While Mugabe had signed a deal with MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai and MDC-offshoot leader Arthur Mutambara that outlined a power-sharing agreement for the troubled country there have been problems with putting it into practice.

The disagreement on how the cabinet positions should be allocated has jeopardized the deal and former South African President Thabo Mbeki has been called back to continue mediation. According to the original agreement ZANU-PF would hold 14 cabinet positions while the MDC would appoint 16 ministers; 13 for the Tsvangirai-led MDC  and 3 for the Mutambara-led MDC faction.

Among the cabinet positions the 84-year-old Mugabe filled with ZANU-PF ministers were Defense, Foreign Affairs, Justice and Local Government.
