Joerg Haider, Leader of Alliance for Austria’s Future, Killed in Car Accident

Joerg Haider, leader of the far-right party Alliance of Austria’s Future, was killed in a car accident on Saturday. The 58-year-old Haider was traveling alone when his car went off the road in Carinthia and he suffered massive head and chest injuries.

Haider headed the Alliance for Austria’s Future and drew a surprising amount of support for the party’s anti-immigration and anti-EU policies in last month’s general election.

While he had made controversial statements regarding his admiration for Nazi employment practices nobody questioned Haider’s dedication to Austria.

Haider became a powerful political figure as a member and eventual leader of the Freedom Party but after resigning from that position in 2000 he founded the Alliance for Austria’s Future five years later.
