ALCS Game Two Matchup: Boston Red Sox Look for 2-0 Series Lead Against Tampa Bay Rays with Beckett Facing Kazmir

If the Boston Red Sox can get the same type of pitching performance from Josh Beckett that they got from Daisuke Matsuzaka on Friday night the ALCS could be heading to Fenway Park with the Tampa Bay Rays down 2-0 in their best-of-seven playoff series.

Heading into Friday night’s game Matsuzaka had faced the Rays three times during the season but had pitched past the fifth inning in any of those games; in Game One he had a no-hitter through six before leaving the game after seven complete innings.

That could be good news for Beckett (12-10 4.03 ERA) who was 2-1 in five starts against the Rays this year but threw only five innings against the Los Angeles Angels in the Red Sox Game Three loss in the ALDS. In Beckett’s last outing against the Rays he pitched eight strong innings allowing just three hits and one run at Tropicana Field but Tampa pulled out the win 2-1 in the bottom of the ninth.

Tampa will counter Beckett with Scott Kazmir (12-8 3.49 ERA) who started the season 6-1 but didn’t post a winning month after May. Kazmir was 0-2 in four starts against the Red Sox including a three inning, nine-run effort at home in his last outing against Boston. The lefthander threw more than six innings three times in May but got past that mark just three times the rest of the year.

Game Two is scheduled to start at 8:07 p.m. ET.
