They may have renamed the game as the Red River Rivalry but it was certainly a Red River Shootout in Dallas on Saturday as the #5 Texas Longhorns (6-0) overcame a 35-30 fourth quarter deficit to knock off the #1 Oklahoma Sooners (5-1) 45-35 in a game that featured more than 800 yards of total offense between the two teams.
Colt McCoy threw for 277 yard and a touchdown for Texas while Chris Ogbonnaya collected 127 yards on the ground and Jordan Shipley had 112 yards receiving and a TD while adding 113 yards on kick returns including a 96-yard touchdown that kept the Longhorns in the game in the first half.
For the Sooners, Sam Bradford was sharp as he threw for 387 yards and five touchdowns but the Longhorns held the running game of Oklahoma in check, allowing just 48 yards and came up big on third down plays to force punts.
The game had its moments of controversy, none bigger than a call late in the third quarter when McCoy appeared to be picked off in the endzone with Texas trailing 28-27. Referees ruled the pass incomplete and didn’t review the play, allowing the Longhorns to kick a field goal and take their first lead of the game 30-28.
Oklahoma came back early in the fourth quarter as Bradford tossed his fifth TD of the game, a 14-yarder to Manuel Johnson but Texas responded and Cody Johnson capped a 74-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run, his second of the game with 7:37 left in the game. Three minutes later Johnson would score his third TD of the game, a two-yarder and that sealed the game for the Longhorns.
Texas will host the #3 Missouri Tigers while Oklahoma will look to bounce back when they host the #16 Kansas Jayhawks.
