Movement for Democratic Change leader Morgan Tsvangirai has threatened to quit a power-sharing deal that had been forged between his party and the ruling ZANU-PF party led by Robert Mugabe following a disagreement over the appointment of cabinet positions.
Tsvangirai has accused Mugabe of filling key cabinet posts with his own ministers, a violation of the deal they had worked out last month.
The MDC leader told a crowd in Harare that if Mugabe were to operate the government in such a manner then the MDC had no reason to be a part of it.
According to the power-sharing arrangement mediated by former South African President Thabo Mbeki the ZANU-PF would fill 14 ministries while 13 would be filled by Tsvangirai’s MDC and another 3 would be filled by the MDC faction led by Arthur Mutambara.
On Saturday Mugabe announced the posts that would be filled by ZANU-PF ministers and they included Justice, Defense, Local Government, Foreign Affairs and Media.
Mbeki is expected to arrive in Harare on Monday in an effort bring the sides to a compromise yet Tsvangirai has said he would not just reach a compromise for the sake of saving the deal.
Tsvangirai won the presidential election in March but officials declared he had not secured a large enough majority to avoid a run-off. He then pulled out of the June run-off with less than a week before the vote after declaring the election had been neither free nor fair and accused Mugabe of using violence against his supporters to intimidate them.
