In a hearing Friday, a jury found Brian David Mitchell guilty of the abduction of Elizabeth Smart in 2003. Mitchell, 57, sang “The Great Redeemer Died” as he was led into the courtroom and as the verdict was read.
He was found guilty on federal charges of kidnapping and transporting a minor across state lines for purposes of sex. Smart, 23, smiled and hugged her parents after the verdict was delivered. Mitchell faces life in prison. His sentencing was scheduled for May 25, 2011.
Mitchell kidnapped Smart from her Utah home on June 5, 2002. During her 9 month captivity, Smart was repeatedly raped by Mitchell. She was rescued in March 2003 after a police officer found her walking down a Salt Lake County street with Mitchell and his accomplice, Wanda Barzee.
In 2009, Barzee pleaded guilty to kidnapping charges. She is serving a 15 year sentence.
