New York Rangers Top Prospect Alexei Cherepanov Collapses on Bench, Dies

New York Rangers top prospect Alexei Cherepanov collapsed on his team’s bench during the third period of a Monday night game in Russia and was later pronounced dead. Cherepanov was 19.

Cherepanov was playing for the Avangard Omsk when he collapsed and stopped breathing. He had been the Rangers’ first-round pick in the 2007 NHL draft and was considered one of the organization’s most highly regarded prospects.

Rangers’ president and general manager Glen Sather released a statement noting, “On behalf of the New York Rangers organization, I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to his family. Alexei was an intelligent, energetic young man, with tremendous talent and an extremely bright future.’

A cause of death has not been announced.
