NLCS Game Four: Philadelphia Phillies Use Eighth Inning Rally to Down Los Angeles Dodgers, Take 3-1 Series Lead

Shane Victorino hit a two-run blast in the eighth inning to tie the game and Matt Stairs hit a pinch-hit two-run blast moments later to lift the Philadelphia Phillies a 7-5 come-from-behind victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers and take a 3-1 advantage in their best-of-seven NLCS.

The Phillies jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning as Chase Utley doubled off Dodgers starter Derek Lowe to bring home Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard followed with a ground out that plated Jayson Werth.

L.A. would get one of those runs back in the bottom half of the frame as James Loney doubled off Joe Blanton to score Rafael Furcal but that was all the Dodgers could manage. They struck again in the fifth as Manny Ramirez scored Furcal with a single and Russell Martin grounded out to score Andre Ethier to give L.A. a 3-2 advantage.

Philly managed to tie the score in the top of the sixth when Ryan Howard came home on a wild pitch from Chan Ho Park but the Dodgers reclaimed the lead with a Casey Blake solo homer in the bottom of the sixth and Juan Pierre came around to score on a throwing error by Howard after Furcal laid down a bunt.

That 5-3 lead was erased in the top of the eight as Hong-Chih Kuo gave up a single to Howard to start the inning  and manager Joe Torre called on Cory Wade who got Pat Burrell to pop out but then gave upa two-run blast to Victorino to tie the game at 5-5. Pedro Feliz lined out to left for the second out but Carlos Ruiz singled and Torre once again called on his bullpen as Cory Wade came on to face Matt Stairs. Stairs then hit a bomb to right for the 7-5 lead.

L.A. threatened in the bottom of the eighth but couldn’t push a run across and Brad Lidge finished the game off in the ninth setting the Dodgers down in order.

Game Five will be played on Wednesday with Cole Hamels pitching for the Phillies and the Dodgers sending Chad Billingsley to the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 8:22 p.m. ET.
