Overweight Killer Richard Cooey Executed in Ohio

Despite his argument that he was too overweight to be executed the state of Ohio put to death Richard Cooey on Tuesday morning after his final appeals were denied.

Cooey had argued that at 5-foot-7, 267-pounds, the state could not humanely execute him but the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against his appeal on Monday. His lawyers had said his weight and the fact he was on medication would affect his execution by lethal injection.

On Tuesday Cooey was given a pre-execution exam and was cleared and by 10:28 a.m. he was pronounced dead.

Cooey was executed for the murders of two University of Akron students in 1986.
