With the midpoint of the 2008 college football season close, it is time to highlight the players that have made themselves candidates for the illustrious Heisman Trophy award.
Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel is a front-runner after a spectacular start, despite a recent upset to Oklahoma State, in which he was 39-for-52 for 390 yards, one TD and a season-high three INTs.
The game was his first snag on a great start, in which he is third in the nation for total offense and fifth in passing efficiency. Daniel leads the nation's third-best passing offense, total offense and scoring offense.
Stats: 158-for-208, 2,055 yards, 16 TDs, 4 INTs
Daniel's teammate Jeremy Maclin is one of the best wide receivers in college football. Maclin caught six passes for 180 yards against Oklahoma State. As a kick and punt returner, he is one of the nation's biggest all-purpose threats.
Maclin is third in the nation in all-purpose running, 11th in the nation in receiving yards per game and tied for 20th in receptions per game. He is tenth in kickoff return average
Stats: 39 receptions, 600 yards, 5 TDs; 128 PR yards; 365 KR yards, 1 TD; 64 rushing yards
Texas quarterback Colt McCoy skyrocketed his status as a Heisman candidate on Saturday after leading his #5 Longhorns defeated their archrivals #1 Oklahoma, 45-35, in the Red River Shootout. McCoy was 28-for-35 for 277 yards and a touchdown.
McCoy leads the nation in completion percentage, is fourth in the nation in passing efficiency and ninth in total offense. In addition, he leads the Longhorns with 348 rushing yards. Texas has the fifth-best scoring offense in the nation and 11th total offense.
Stats: 131-for-165, 1,557 yards, 17 TDs, 3 INTs; 348 rushing yards, 4 TDs
Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford lost the battle to Texas on Saturday, but he might have won the highly-anticipated QB battle with McCoy. Bradford completed 28-for-39 passes for 387 yards with 5 TDs and 2 INTs in the Sooners' first loss. The game was his third five-touchdown game this season.
Bradford is second in the nation in passing efficiency and eighth in total offense. He leads the nation's fourth-best passing and scoring offense, and the sixth-best total offense.
Stats: 134-for-185, 2,052 yards, 23 TDs, 5 INTs
Like Missouri, Texas Tech has a quarterback/wide receiver combination that is under consideration for the Heisman. Quarterback Graham Harrell led the Red Raiders in a 37-31 win against Nebraska, completing 20-of-25 passes for 284 yards and 2 TDs.
Harrell leads the nation's top passing offense, second-best total offense and sixth-best scoring offense. He leads the nation in passing yards, is second in the nation in total offense and eighth in passing efficiency.
Stats: 178-for-262, 2,311 yards, 20 TDs, 3 INTs
Texas Tech wide receiver Michael Crabtree was the first freshman to ever win the Biletnikoff Award for the nation's top receiver. This year, as a sophomore, he is well on his way to repeating the feat. Against Oklahoma State, he had five catches for 89 yards and 2 TDs.
Crabtree is fourth in the nation in receiving yards, second in receiving touchdowns and 11th in receptions.
Stats: 43 receptions, 653 yards, 10 TDs
While Florida quarterback Tim Tebow won the 2007 Heisman Trophy, his wide receiver Percy Harvin is the most likely candidate this year for the Gators. Harvin, one of the nation's greatest dual threats, had six catches for 112 yards and 2 TDs in the Gators' upset win against #4 LSU.
Harvin is among the nation's leaders in rushing yards for a receiver and leads UF in receptions and receiving yards. His statistics don't rank among the nation's best, partially due to the balance of Florida's offense, but his impact is evident.
Stats: 25 receptions, 396 yards, 5 TDs; 29 carries, 190 yards, 2 TDs
Michigan State running back Javon Ringer is undoubtedly one of the nation's best offensive stars and is the consensus pick as the nation's best running back. Against Northwestern, Ringer had 35 carries for 124 yards and 2 TDs, helping to give the Wildcats their first loss.
Ringer is second in the nation in both rushing yards and all-purpose yards, while he leads the nation in rushing touchdowns and carries.
Stats: 247 yards, 1,112 yards, 14 TDs; 224 KR yards
