California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency for the Los Angeles area Tuesday after wildfires swept through the L.A. region.
According to Schwarzenegger, 70% of the fires have been contained and 4,000 buildings are severly threatened. The state of emergency was called for Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
Three major wildfires swarmed in L.A.'s San Fernando Valley and northern San Diego County, charring thousands of acres and killing two people over the past three days.
More than 2,000 firefighters and several aircraft battled the Sesnon Fire, a 5,000 acre fire, in canyons on the western portion of the valley and another 5,300-acre fire known as the Marek Fire at the northeast end. Both were burning brightly Tuesday morning, illuminating the skies with flames.
Santa Ana winds were gusting at 50 mph in parts of the valley and up to 80 mph in other areas Tuesday morning.
Another 3,000 acres were scorched by Tuesday morning in Camp Pendleton, forcing the evacuation of more than 1,400 homes at the large San Diego County Marine base. Oceanside was also heavily affected by the fires.
Interstate 215 in San Bernadino was closed in both directions, while the 118 Ronald Reagan Freeway was closed again Tuesday.
