After being embarrassed by the Tampa Bay Rays in a 9-1 loss at home on Monday night the Boston Red Sox will look to bounce back Tuesday evening and look to even their best-of-seven ALCS 2-2 as they send Tim Wakefield to the hill to face Rays’ starter Andy Sonnanstine.
Wakefield (10-11 4.13 ERA) was 0-2 against the Rays in the regular season and Boston dropped all three games against Tampa in which Wakefield started (all on the road). In his last start against the Rays Wakefield lasted 2 1/3 innings and allowed six earned runs. The knuckleballer was 7-4 at Fenway Park and posted a 3.10 ERA and he’ll need another strong outing on Tuesday to keep the Red Sox from falling into a 3-1 hole.
The Rays will send Sonnanstine (13-9 4.38) to the mound and the right-handed rookie snapped a three-game losing streak when he beat the Chicago White Sox in Game Four of the ALDS to clinch a spot in the ALCS. While Sonnanstine didn’t earn a decision in either of his starts against the Red Sox he was more than impressive in both outings, allowing just two runs in 13 innings.
Game Four of the ALCS is scheduled to start at 8:07 p.m. ET.
