Oceana Announces 2008 “Adopt a Sea Creature” Holiday Gift Program

Group expands choices for annual adoption drive in support of ocean conservation

Today Oceana, the largest international advocacy group dedicated solely to protecting the world’s oceans, announced the start of its third annual holiday giving program.  All proceeds support Oceana and its efforts to protect the world’s oceans.

Oceana is expanding its symbolic creature adoption program this year, allowing holiday shoppers to symbolically adopt one of 10 marine creatures and receive a matching marine creature cookie cutter.  Participants will also be able to symbolically adopt one of four marine creatures and receive matching plush toys.  Other premiums include an Oceana baking mitt, a personalized adoption certificate and special gift packaging.

“Whether for you or a loved one, Oceana's cookie cutters and stuffed animals are a great reminder that our ocean creatures and oceans need protection,” said Maureen McGregor, Oceana’s Director of e-Activism and Marketing.  “Science tells us we may only have a few decades left to bring our oceans back from the brink of irreversible collapse."

Visitors to Oceana’s online adoption center will first be presented with images of 10 different adoption choices including a dolphin, shark, turtle, octopus, whale, penguin, polar bear and seal.  After selecting a creature, visitors will be led to an online fulfillment page, where they can then select one of 6 donation levels.  In return, gift recipients can receive matching cookie cutters or plush toys.  The baking sets come with a sugar cookie recipe and an Oceana baking mitt (as an extra premium).  Those who adopt can also personalize their adoption certificates for the marine creatures, frame the resulting certificates and have any of the adopted creatures or premiums wrapped as gifts for their family and friends.

“The cookie cutters are perfect for families to enjoy together; they’re fun to bake with and you can be creative with cookie decorations - the stuffed animals are meaningful for anyone because they remind people of the actual marine creatures their donation helps protect,” said McGregor.

As part of this years program, Oceana is renewing its partnership with Warren Brown, star of the Food Network’s show Sugar Rush.  Brown, along with his chain of Washington-based
Cake Love bakeries has once again donated special sugar cookie recipe that was exclusively designed for this program in 2007.
