Willy Aybar was 4-5 with a home run and five RBIs, Carl Crawford was 5-5 with a pair of doubles, a triple and two RBIs and Carlos Pena was 1-3 with a homer and two RBIs as the Tampa Bay Rays pounded the Boston Red Sox 13-4 on Tuesday night to take a 3-1 advantage in their best-of-seven ALCS and now sit one game away from the franchise’s first trip to the World Series.
Tampa wasted little time getting at Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield as they struck for three runs in the top of the first as Pena hit a two-run homer and Evan Longoria followed with his third homer of the series. Wakefield looked like he settled down after breezing through the second but ran into trouble once again in the third after giving up a two-run bomb to Aybar and once Dioner Navarro singled Boston manager Terry Francona lifted Wakefield and brought in Justin Masterson.
Boston got on the board in the third inning when Kevin Cash hit a solo blast over the Green Monster off Rays’ starter Andy Sonnanstine but he set down the next twelve Red Sox hitters in order. While Sonnanstine was dominating on the mound the Rays bats continued to hammer away at Boston’s pitchers.
After Aybar scored B.J. Upton on a single in the fifth they added another five runs in the top of the sixth that put the game away.
The Red Sox added a run in the bottom of the seventh on a Kevin Youkilis ground out that scored David Ortiz but Tampa put two more on the board in the eight as Crawford tripled home Pena and Aybar followed with his fourth hit of the game, a single that scored Crawford.
Boston would add a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth but it was little consolation as they suffered their third straight loss to the Rays and now face a must-win situation on Thursday when they next face Tampa.
Game Five will be played in Boston with the Red Sox sending Daisuke Matsuzaka to the mound while the Rays counter with James Shields.
