Officials from Russia and Georgia are attending a meeting in Geneva in hopes of resolving the conflict that sparked a brief war over the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in August.
Following that war Russia recognized the independence of the two regions drawing international condemnation. Russia has said they would maintain troops in both South Ossetia and Abkhazia as a means of protecting the citizens from future Georgian attacks. Just last week they withdrew troops from buffer zones surrounding the regions in accord with a peace deal struck to end the conflict.
According to several reports the Russian officials and Georgian officials are not meeting in front of each other. Russia has expressed a desire to have officials from the two regions present at the talks but Georgia has opposed such an action.
The talks are being mediated by the UN, EU and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe. Mediators have expressed a belief that the talks were unlikely to produce immediate results.
