The Washington Redskins signed former All-Pro running back Shaun Alexander to a one-year contract on Tuesday.
Alexander was signed with the hopes of replacing Ladell Betts, who is recovering from a knee injury. Betts is expected to miss three weeks due to the injury. Alexander will back up Clinton Portis, who leads the NFL in rushing yards.
Alexander, who was released by the Seahawks in the offseason, had visited the Saints, Bengals and Lions before signing with Washington. Alexander worked with Redskins head coach Jim Zorn and running backs coach Stump Mitchell in Seattle.
Alexander rushed for 9,428 yards in eight seasons with the Seahawks. He was named to three Pro Bowls and was named the AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year and NFL MVP in 2005, in which he led the Seahawks to Super Bowl XL. That season, he tied the record for most touchdowns with 27.
