The Consumer Product Safety Commission voted Wednesday to ban drop side cribs in the United States. The new safety standard will prevent drop side cribs from being manufactured, sold and resold in the U.S.
CPSC spokeswoman Patty Davis said the ban will go into effect by June 2011. The new safety standard will also call for stronger crib hardware and mattresses.
More than 9 million cribs have been recalled in recent years due to the risk of babies becoming trapped and suffocating. According to the CSPC, drop side cribs have been blamed for the deaths of 36 infants between November 2007 and April of this year.
