New York authorities announced Wednesday that the four bodies found strewn along a quarter mile stretch of Oak Beach in Long Island, New York are all women. The bodies have not been identified.
Detectives believe the women’s deaths may have been the work of a serial killer. Officers and cadaver dogs are looking for more bodies on the beach. "We're looking at that — that we could have a serial killer," said Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer.
The first body was discovered Saturday while officers were searching for Shannon Gilbert, a New Jersey prostitute who was reported missing in May. She disappeared after arranging to meet a client on Fire Island. The other three bodies, which were in different stages of decomposition, were discovered Monday. All four bodies were in bushes. Police believe the women were killed elsewhere and then thrown from a vehicle onto the beach.
The FBI is working on the case with local police.
