Dedicated to their mission “To improve the quality of life for individuals, families and communities affected by alcohol and drug dependency by providing supportive educational services grounded in the Twelve Step principles of Alcoholics Anonymous which are widely accessible, cost-effective and of the highest quality”, The Retreat has been restoring hope and changing the lives of suffering alcoholics and drug addicts since 1998.
Unlike many drug and alcohol treatment centers The Retreat is grounded in the spiritual principles of Twelve Steps, placing a strong emphasis on individual reflection, spiritual growth, working with others, removing resentments, and building strong relationships; all essential tools for lasting sobriety.
Just as Alcoholics Anonymous recognizes that the drink is simply a symptom of a much deeper disease, the staff at The Retreat works closely with each person, helping them to address the issues in their life that may have contributed to their alcoholism or drug addiction. Acknowledging these issues and learning to deal with them is an essential step in recovery and brings the suffering alcoholic and addict closer to a rewarding life of sobriety.
Because nobody understands an alcoholic like an alcoholic, the alcohol rehab program at The Retreat employs a community of over 300 volunteers, all of whom have been directly affected by alcoholism and drug addiction. These volunteers are living testaments to the power of recovery and symbolize the hope and promise that a life of sobriety and contentment is possible.
Nestled in the beautiful Wayzata Big Woods, located just west of the twin cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, The Retreat provides the ideal environment for recovery. The serene setting inspires renewal, helping people to shed their old life and begin anew, sober and happy.

The Retreat represents a non-clinical approach to the problem of alcohol and drug dependency. This supportive, educational setting is grounded in the spiritual principles of AA. By providing a safe and supportive environment to study and practice these principles, The Retreat opens the door to a life of sobriety and contentment.
