NLCS Game Five: Philadelphia Phillies Heading to World Series after Knocking Off Los Angeles Dodgers

Ryan Howard went 3-4 with an RBI, Jimmy Rollins hit a leadoff homer, and Cole Hamels tossed seven innings allowing just five hits and one run while striking out five as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-1 on Wednesday night to clinch the best-of-seven NLCS and punch their ticket to the World Series where they will face the winner of the Boston Red Sox – Tampa Bay Rays ALCS.

It was Rollins who got things started for the Phillies as the switch hitting shortstop homered off Dodgers starter Chad Billingsley in the top of the first.

Hamels looked a bit shaky to start the game but quickly settled down and when Ryan Howard singled home Rollins in the third and Pat Burrell followed with an RBI single that plated Chase Utley that was all the Phillies lefty needed to attack the L.A. hitters.

Philadelphia added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth with the help of three errors by Dodgers shortstop Rafael Furcal. After putting Howard and Utley at first and second Pat Burrell reached on an error by Furcal and Howard came around to score on a wild throw by Furcal. After Shane Victorino walked to load the bases Greg Maddux, who had come on in the fourth inning, struck out Pedro Feliz and then got a ground ball off the bat of Carlos Ruiz but Furcal tossed the ball away to push the score to 5-0.

The score would stay the same until the bottom of the sixth when Manny Ramirez hit his second homer in the NLCS to cut the Dodgers deficit to 5-1. Despite the blast Hamels stayed in the game and got the Phillies through seven innings, turning the ball over to Ryan Madson in the eighth.

After getting Furcal and Andre Ethier out with no problems Madson gave up a single to Ramirez and then got Russell Martin to ground out to Howard at first.

Brad Lidge came on in the ninth to shut the door and after giving up a leadoff single to James Loney he got Casey Blake to fly out to center, Matt Kemp did the same and Nomar Garciaparra popped out to Ruiz behind the plate.

Cole Hamels was named the NLCS MVP after earning wins in Game One and Game Five while allowing just three runs in 14 innings.
