Joe Wurzelbacher, "Joe The Plumber", Has Potential Tie to Keating Five

Joe Wurzelbacher has become a household name as "Joe the Plumber" after several references by Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain during their final presidential candidate on Wednesday.

During a rally last week, Wurzelbacher, whose full name is Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher, asked Obama about his tax plan. Joe, a plumber from Toledo, Ohio, voiced concerns about Obama's plan, because he was working to buy the plumbing company that he works for.

Obama responded that he wanted to use higher taxes for people making $250,000. "I think that when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody," Obama had said.

Obama and "Joe the Plumber" received a lot of attention after the comment, so much that Joe was mentioned at least 20 times during the debate.

After further research, "Joe the Plumber" has the same last name as Robert M. Wurzelbacher Jr., the son-in-law of Charles Keating of the infamous "Keating Five" scandal, a situation that McCain was involved in but was absolved by Congress.

Wurzelbacher served a 40-month prison sentence in 1993 in connection with Keating's Lincoln Savings and Loan collapse. He was charged with three felony counts of misapplication of federally insured funds.

Wurzelbacher had been a senior vice president of Lincoln's parent company, the American Continental Corporation of Phoenix, and the chief executive of an investment firm owned by Lincoln Savings.

It is unknown what Robert Wurzelbacher has done since he was released from prison, but there is a Robert M. Wurzelbacher, who lives just outside of Cincinnati, owns a wood company, and donates to Republicans, such as Bob Barr, John Ashcroft and Rudy Giuliani.

Cincinnati and Toledo are 200 miles away from each other. The distance and last name has swirled rumors that the two are related, but there is no empirical evidence.

According to Lucas County records, "Joe the Plumber" is registered to vote under the name Samuel Joseph Worzelbacher. He has a state income tax lien of $1182.98.
