When attempting to make your home more energy efficient, the Mesothelioma and Asbestos Awareness Center would like to stress asbestos safety for homeowners and their families.
Asbestos exists in nearly 38 million homes and buildings across the country, the majority of which is within older construction compounds that could potentially be hazardous. Even as most asbestos products were banned in the late 1970's by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, these products are still in homes and homeowner should be aware of potential hazards.
Here a few tips for asbestos safety when conducting efficiency renovations.
* When replacing older insulation fixtures, consult with a home inspector or asbestos consultant to ensure their is no asbestos within.
* When disposing of water heater sleeves, ensure that are intact and contain no asbestos by speaking to one of the above professionals
* When switching to more energy efficient light fixtures, ensure that the wiring contains no asbestos insulation. Also be sure when engaging with older ceilings that they are intact and stable.
By following a few simple tips, we can all prevent harmful asbestos exposures. Asbestos exposure has been conclusively linked to mesothelioma, a rare type of cancer.
