Last Titanic Survivor Millvina Dean Selling Mementoes

The last remaining survivor of Titanic is auction mementoes from the liner in order to pay nursing home fees. Millvina Dean was 2 months old when she, her mother, father and brother boarded the liner for its maiden voyage. The Dean family was destined for Kansas. Dean, her mother Eva and baby brother were rescued from the sinking ship. Her father died.

Dean, now 96, is struggling to pay her nursing home fees and has decided to auction off her mementoes  in hopes that the money will help her pay her debts.

“I was hoping to be here for two weeks after breaking my hip but I developed an infection and have been here for two years. I am not able to live in my home anymore,” she says. “I am selling it all now because I have to pay these nursing home fees and am selling anything that I think might fetch some money. These fees are quite expensive. The more money I can get from the auction the better.”

Among the items being auction is a 100-year-old suitcase filled with clothes Dean’s family was given when they arrived in New York. The auction is being held Saturday at Henry Aldridge and Son auctioneers in Devizes, England.

The Titanic was carrying over 2,200 passengers when it sank in the frigid Atlantic Ocean in 1912. Only 706 people survived.
