Midnight Madness for college basketball begins Friday night at 9pm, becoming the official start for the upcoming 2008-09 season.
The Midnight Madness special will be broadcasted on ESPN for four hours as the network shows several top men's and women's college basketball programs and their festivities.
ESPN has not released the list of the programs that it will feature, but in the past, the network has previewed North Carolina, Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, Georgetown, UCLA, Indiana and UConn for men's basketball, and Tennessee, Stanford, UNC, Connecticut, Maryland and LSU for women's.
Under NCAA rules, basketball teams cannot practice until the third Saturday of October. On Oct. 15, 1971, Lefty Driesell held midnight practice for Maryland in an attempt to take the rule literally. Years later, several teams held midnight practice, but the festivities became bigger and bigger.
Now Midnight Madness is the formal celebration and pep rally for the beginning of the college basketball season, equipped with slam dunk exhibitions, intra-squad games and three-point shootouts. Celebrities join the show for big-time programs as well, making it an event that can transcend the sport.
Some Midnight Madness celebrations call for tickets, while others are first come, first serve, depending on the institution.
The first game of the 2008-09 college basketball season begins on Nov. 14 as Duke plays Presbyterian. However, most teams begin the week after.
