Zimbabwe opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai has called the recent impasse in the power-sharing deal with President Robert Mugabe “a problem of trust” but remained optimistic that a solution could be reached.
Tsvangirai, leader of the Movement for Democratic Change party, and Mugabe, leader of the ZANU-PF party, agreed in principle to a deal but have hit a snag over the appointment of ministers to cabinet positions.
Talks had been held for four days before breaking on Friday after which Tsvangirai said Mugabe appeared unwilling to listen during the negotiations. On Saturday the MDC leader stated, “There's nothing wrong with deal, that's why we signed. It's only when it came to implementation that we ran into problems.”
That deal gave the ZANU-PF power to appoint 14 ministers while the Tsvangirai-led MDC had 13 and the Arthur Mutambara-led offshoot of MDC was given 3 appointments. Last Saturday Mugabe announced several key positions within the cabinet would be filled with ZANU-PF ministers, angering opposition leaders.
Former South African President Thabo Mbeki has continued to try and mediate the talks but Tsvangirai described the negotiations with Mugabe as a “one-man monologue. Mugabe does not negotiate. He just says 'No'.”
