AP Top 25 College Football Scores: #19 South Florida Bulls Run Over Syracuse Orange in Big East Showdown

Matt Grothe threw for 248 yards and three touchdowns and added 72 yards rushing and a TD as the #19 South Florida Bulls (6-1, 1-1) put up 487 yards of total offense and collected 26 first downs while their defense limited the Syracuse Orange (1-6, 0-3) to just 230 yards of offense and 11 first downs in a 45-13 beating in Big East action on Saturday.

South Florida was first on the board with a Benjamin Williams one-yard touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead and after the Orange kicked a field goal Grothe found Taurus Johnson on a 7-yard touchdown pass to push the advantage to 14-3. Syracuse didn’t just fold though as Curtis Brinkley brought the Orange to within 14-10 on a 24-yard TD run but Grothe answered with an 11-yard touchdown run to push the lead back to 11. Patrick Shadle kept the Orange within eight when he kicked a 24-yard field goal just before the half but Syracuse wouldn’t get any closer.

The second half belonged to the Bulls as Grothe tossed a pair of TDs in the third quarter, a one-yarder to A.J. Love and a 9-yard toss to Johnson, and the fourth quarter provided no relief to Syracuse either as Maikon Bonani kicked a 31-yard field goal and Richard Kelly scored on a 2-yard run.

South Florida will travel to Louisville next week while Syracuse takes on Louisville in two weeks.
