Daryll Clark threw for 171 yards and a touchdown and added 45 yards and two TDs on the ground, Evan Royster collected 174 yards rushing and a touchdown and Deon Butler had 105 yards receiving on eight catches as the #3 Penn State Nittany Lions (8-0, 4-0) used 39 unanswered points to drop the Michigan Wolverines (2-5, 1-2) 46-17 in Big Ten action on Saturday.
Early on it looked like Michigan was going to make a run at the upset as Brandon Minor gave the Wolverines a 7-0 lead on a 5-yard touchdown run and then a K.C. Lopata kicked a 27-yard field goal to boost the lead to 10-0. Penn State wasted little time responding to the field goal though as Royster broke through the line and went 44-yards for a touchdown. Michigan didn’t seem fazed though as they once again turned to Minor who scored on a one-yard run to push the Wolverines advantage to 17-7 early in the second quarter, but that would be the last time they would put points on the board. Penn State gave the Wolverines an idea of what was to come in the second half as they closed the second quarter with a Clark to Jordan Norwood 3-yard touchdown pass.
Penn State tied the game midway through the third quarter with a Kevin Kelly 42-yard field goal and took their first lead of the game when Jared Odrick tackled Nick Sheridan in the endzone for a safety and the Nittany Lions were in front 19-17. Clark then gave them a 26-17 lead when he scored on a keeper from a yard out.
The Nittany Lions would add a pair of Kelly field goals in the fourth quarter as well as Clark’s second TD run and an 80-yard TD pass from Pat Devlin to Stephfon Green to wrap up the scoring.
Penn State collected 482 yards of total offense compared to 291 yards for Michigan.
The big showdown comes next week as Penn State travels to Ohio State while Michigan hosts Michigan State.
