David Ortiz was 2-4 with a double and an RBI, Coco Crisp was 3-4 with a run scored, Kevin Youkilis was 1-5 with a homerun and two RBIs and Jonathan Papelbon pitched a perfect ninth inning as the Boston Red Sox beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-2 on Saturday in Game Six of their best-of-seven ALCS and force a Game Seven on Sunday.
Tampa struck first as B.J. Upton hit a solo blast in the first inning off Red Sox starter Josh Beckett but Kevin Youkilis answered for Boston in the top of the second as he hit a solo shot off Rays starter Jason Shields to tie the game.
Youkilis would put the Red Sox ahead in the third with a ground out to Jason Bartlett at short that scored Dustin Pedroia. Beckett didn’t have his best stuff but continued to battle his way through the Rays line-up but in the bottom of the fifth he gave up a solo homerun to Bartlett that tied the score.
Once again the Red Sox answered in their next at-bat as Jason Varitek got his first hit of the series, a two-out solo homer off Shields for a 3-2 lead. Crisp then reached on an infield single and J.P. Howell came on in relief of Shields. Pedroia then grounded to short but Bartlett threw the ball away to put runners on first and third and David Ortiz followed with a single that plated Crisp.
Hideki Okajima came on to work the sixth and seventh for the Red Sox and set the Rays down with no trouble and Justin Masterson got through a spell of trouble in the eighth before the ball was in Papelbon’s hand to close out the game.
Game Seven will be played on Sunday at Tropicana Field with Jon Lester throwing for Boston while Matt Garza pitches for Tampa.
