Colin Powell Announces Endorsement of Senator Barack Obama in Presidential Race

Former Secretary of State Gen. Colin Powell has announced his endorsement of Sen. Barack Obama for the 2008 presidential election, citing the Democrats “ability to inspire” in a time when the United States is in need of restoring its global image.

Powell stated an Obama victory “would not just electrify our country, it would electrify the world.”

Speaking on Meet the Press on Sunday morning Powell said, “I think he would be a transformational president” and regarded Obama as the right man to inspire a new generation of Americans. Powell also expressed his belief that Obama had the right approach to the current economic problems.

Despite his endorsement of Obama the former Sec. of State said the decision wasn’t easy noting, “It isn't easy for me to disappoint Sen. McCain in the way that I have this morning, and I regret that.”
