Chinese Oil Workers Kidnapped in Sudan

Nine Chinese oil workers and two Sudanese drivers were kidnapped in Sudan’s southern state of Kordofan on Saturday. One of the drivers had been released with a note stating the abductors wanted a share of the money that was being gained in the oil-rich region.

The men had been abducted from an oil field that was owned by a group of oil companies from China, India, Malaysia and Sudan.

There has been no contact with the kidnappers who are believed to be Darfur rebels who have accused China of supporting the Sudanese government through oil revenues. The rebels have been involved in a longstanding struggle with the Arab-dominated government for years.
