A summit designed to bridge the gap between Zimbabwe’s rival political parties was strongly criticized by the Movement for Democratic Change after its leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, was denied a passport to attend the meeting in Swaziland.
Tsvangirai’s MDC party and President Robert Mugabe’s ZANU-PF party have been at a stalemate since the sides agreed to a power-sharing deal last month. While the two sides came to an agreement that would put Tsvangirai in the position of prime and Mugabe would remain president, the two sides continue to butt heads over the appointment of cabinet positions.
According to the deal Mugabe would appoint 15 ministers to cabinet posts while Tsvangirai would have 13 appointments and an MDC offshoot led by Arthur Mutambara would have three. Mugabe recently announced that he had appointed 14 ministers to key cabinet posts, angering Tsvangirai who called the move yet another ploy by the President to dominate the government.
After four days of talks to remedy the situation failed a summit was announced by the Southern African Development Community to be held Monday in Swaziland but Tsvangirai was denied a passport to travel, instead he was granted an emergency travel document, something the MDC called an “insult” and an example of how Mugabe has refused to take the talks seriously.
