Ben Bernanke, the U.S. Federal Reserve chairman, told a budget committee from the U.S. House of Representatives that the government needed to increase its spending to stimulate the economy and fend off the current slide.
Bernanke has said the government should consider another round of stimulus but that idea has not been popular among many Republicans in Washington.
Speaking before the committee Bernanke noted, “With the economy likely to be weak for several quarters, and with some risk of a protracted slowdown, consideration of a fiscal package by the Congress at this juncture seems appropriate.”
