The 2008 World Series picture was cleared Sunday night when the Tampa Bay Rays dumped the Boston Red Sox in Game Seven of the ALCS and now the American League pennant winners will take on the Philadelphia Phillies who wrapped up their NLDS series with the Los Angeles Dodgers last Wednesday.
For the Rays, the 2008 regular season produced their first winning record in franchise history and they parlayed that into an ALDS win over the Chicago White Sox and then their ALCS win over the Red Sox. They now have an opportunity to complete their worst-to-first turnaround into a World Championship, ending more than a decade of futility.
As for the Phillies, the National League champions are looking for their first World Series title since 1980 and are making their first World Series appearance since 1993, a series in which they fell to the Toronto Blue Jays in six games. The Phillies breezed through the NLDS against the Milwaukee Brewers and then had little trouble when they faced the L.A. Dodgers in the NLCS and should be rested for the Rays.
Tampa will be hosting game one and are scheduled to put Scott Kazmir (12-8 3.49) on the hill while the Phillies counter with their ace Cole Hamels (14-10 3.09 ERA).
Kazmir started three games in the Rays playoff run in the American League and his last start was solid as he allowed just two hits and no runs over six innings against the Red Sox but was roughed up a bit in his other two starts in which he tossed a total of 9 2/3 innings.
Hamels is perhaps the hottest pitcher in baseball and won all three starts in the National League playoffs, pitching a total of 22 innings and posting a 1.23 ERA in those three starts while averaging a strikeout per inning.
Game One of the 2008 World Series will start on Wednesday from Tropicana Field in Tampa with the first pitch scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET.
