Supreme Court Rules Prosecutor can Remain on “Alpha Dog” Case

The Supreme Court has ruled that Santa Barbara County Deputy District Attorney Ron Zonen could remain on the death penalty case of Jesse James Hollywood, the mastermind behind the killing of 15-year-old Nicholas Markowitz in 2000. The murder was depicted in the 2007 film “Alpha Dog” starring Justin Timberlake, Bruce Willis, Sharon Stone and Emile Hirsch. It was Hirsch who played the fictional character Johnny Truelove, a role based on the involvement of Jesse James Hollywood in the murder.

Zonen had provided “Alpha Dog” director Nick Cassavetes with material from the actual case including probation reports and police files. He had been removed from the case by a California appeals court after it was discovered he aided Cassavetes with the material.

In court documents Zonen had stated he gave the material to Cassavetes as a means of drawing attention to the hunt for Hollywood who had fled the country following the murder. In 2005 he was captured in Brazil and returned to the United States. He is currently in prison in California and has a February 2009 trial date set. If found guilty Hollywood could face the death penalty.
