Canada’s Liberal Party Leader Stephane Dion to Resign Following Election Loss

Stephane Dion, leader of Canada’s Liberal Party, has announced he will resign from his position following his party’s disappointing showing in last week’s election.

Dion said he would remain leader of the Liberal Party until they could hold an election to find a successor. That would likely happen in May when the party is to hold a leadership convention. Dion stated, “I will not be a candidate for the leadership of my party at that convention. I will remain as leader in order to ensure a smooth and successful transition. I will also work hard in the meantime to prepare my party properly for the next leader.”

The Liberal Party won just 76 seats in last week’s election, a drop of 19 seats.
