Police and Protesters Clash in Athens

A protest led by two unions turned violent in Athens, Greece after riot police fired tear gas at a group of demonstrators who had been throwing stones.

The unions had called for a protest in response to the conservative government’s decision to move forward with plans of privatization as well as significant reforms to the country’s pension plans and caps on pay.

Hundreds of thousands of people were said to have taken to the streets causing massive disruption to public transportation and public services. Much of that disruption was due in large part to employees within those industries taking part in the strike.

Many inside Greece have expressed outrage at the government’s decision to move forward with a rescue package for banks while ignoring their demands for reform to minimum wage.
