San Francisco 49ers Fire Mike Nolan as Head Coach, Mike Singletary Named Interim
The San Francisco 49ers fired head coach Mike Nolan on Monday, replacing him with assistant Mike Singletary.
Singletary, the 49ers linebacker coach, will become the interim head coach, effective immediately, according to 49ers GM Scot McCloughan, who was hired by Nolan. Singletary, a Hall of Fame linebacker, played 11 seasons with the Chicago Bears, leading the legendary 1985 Bears defense to a Super Bowl win.
Once Singletary was named as the interim coach, there was speculation that USC head coach Pete Carroll, a former 49ers assistant, would be named the full-time replacement. Carroll told the Los Angeles Daily News on Monday that he did not want to answer questions about the 49ers coaching situation because it would lead to just more inquiries.
Nolan, 49, was 18-37 as coach of the 49ers. Nolan was in the fourth year of a five-year, $8.5 million contract.
The firing was rumored to have taken place after Sunday's game, but it took until Nolan met with team officials on Monday afternoon for the news to be finalized.
The offense was improved this year with the addition of offensive coordinator Mike Martz, but the defense remained inconsistent.
In Nolan's first two seasons, the 49ers had the NFL's worst-ranked offense each season. Mike McCarthy and Norv Turner, Nolan's first two offensive coordinators, both left the franchise after one season for head coaching jobs, and Martz became his fourth offensive coordinator last year.
The 49ers have had five straight losing seasons and were 4-12, 7-9 and 5-11 in three full seasons in Nolan's tenure.
