Former Thai Prime Minister Found Guilty of Corruption

Thaksin Shinawatra, the former prime minister of Thailand, has been sentenced to two years in prison by the Thai Supreme Court after being found guilty of corruption in a case tied to a land deal he involved himself with while in office.

Thaksin stood accused of using his influence to secure a land deal from a state agency for his wife. As part of the Thai constitution prime ministers and their spouses are not allowed to do business with government agencies.

In August Thaksin and his wife fled to the UK after declaring they wouldn’t get a fair trial in the case. Now that he has been found guilty the chief prosecutor in the case has asked the UK to extradite the former leader.

Thaksin was prime minister from 2001-2006 until a military coup tossed him from office.
