Kroger Issues Pet Food Recall Over Harmful Chemical Byproduct

Kroger has issued a recall for pet food sold in at least 19 states. The recall includes 3 to 50 pound bags of Pet Pride Cat Food, Pet Pride Kitten Food, Kroger Value Cat Food, Kroger Value Chunk Food and Old Yeller Chuck Dog Food. The products have an expiration date of October 23, 2011 or October 24, 2011.

The company announced the recall Saturday saying the pet food may contain a toxic chemical byproduct called aflatoxin. Aflatoxin is a fungus that contaminates corn during harvest and processing. If ingested, the toxin can cause fatigue, diarrhea, sluggishness and possibly death. Customers are advised to stop feeding their pets the affected food and consult their veterinarian immediately if their pet shows any symptoms associated with aflatoxin.

The recalled products were sold in stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.
