Child Neglect Charges Dropped Against Casey Anthony, First-Degree Murder Charge Remains

Prosecutors have opted to drop charges of child neglect in the case against Casey Anthony but will pursue other charges, including first-degree murder and manslaughter, related to the disappearance of her daughter Caylee Anthony.

The child neglect charge was dropped because it had been filed under the presumption that Caylee was still alive but now that they are pursuing murder charges the child neglect charge was no longer relevant.

A Florida grand jury indicted the 22-year-old mother last week after hearing evidence that suggested she had a part in the death of her daughter. She is scheduled to be arraigned on Oct. 28 and if convicted she could face life in prison or the death penalty.

Prosecutors have not said if they would pursue capital punishment.

Caylee Anthony went missing in mid-June, two months shy of her third birthday. It wasn’t until mid-July that Casey Anthony reported her daughter missing. She told investigators that she had dropped her daughter off with a babysitter and when she returned to pick her up they were both gone.

As the case progressed investigators gathered evidence that indicated Casey Anthony had played a role in her daughter’s disappearance. Hair samples and DNA evidence was found in the trunk of a car driven by Casey and chloroform was found in the car as well.
