2008 World Series Game One: Tampa Bay Rays Host Philadelphia Phillies as Fall Classic Opens

The Tampa Bay Rays are seeking their first World Series title in franchise history while the Philadelphia Phillies are seeking their first World Series title since 1980 and just their second in their 126 year history. The trek towards that World Series title will begin on Wednesday night when the Rays host the Phillies in Game One from Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg.

Tampa will go with Scott Kazmir (12-8 3.49 ERA), the Rays all-time wins leader, while the Phillies will counter with a lefty of their own, Cole Hamels (14-10 3.09 ERA), one of the most dominant pitchers down the stretch of the 2008 season.

Kazmir hasn’t exactly been lights-out in the 2008 postseason a she has allowed seven runs and 16 hits in 15 2/3 innings. Tampa fans are hoping they’ll see the same Kazmir that tosses six innings of two-hit ball against the Red Sox in Game Five of the ALCS. Kazmir left that game with a 5-0 lead but Boston battered the bullpen and overcame a 7-0 deficit to win 8-7. In his 14 starts at Tropicana Kazmir posted an 8-2 record with a 2.90 ERA.

Kazmir will have his hands full with a top-heavy Phillies lineup that features Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Pat Burrell, all capable of big power

Hamels has been the Phillies key to opening that World Series door as the 24-year-old lefty won all three of his postseason starts, allowing just three runs in 22 innings while striking out 22. In those 22 innings he has allowed just one home run, a number that could be challenged by the bats of B.J. Upton, Evan Longoria and Carlos Pena. Upton has hit seven homeruns since the post season began while Longoria has tagged six round-trippers. Pena was the club leader in the regular season with 31.

Being on the road shouldn’t bother Hamels as he posted a 7-3 record away from Philly this year and won is only start on the road in the postseason, the NLSC clinching Game Five in Los Angeles.

Game One of the World Series is set to start at 8:00 p.m. ET.
