A strong 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Japan at 3:19 a.m. Wednesday morning, causing the Japanese Meteorological Agency to issue a tsunami warning for the Ogasawara Islands. The tremor struck about 95 miles from Chichi-shima.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the quake does not present a “destructive widespread tsunami threat.” "However, earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within a hundred kilometers of the earthquake epicenter. Authorities in the region of the epicenter should be aware of this possibility and take appropriate action,” the center warned.
There have been no reports of injuries or deaths associated with the earthquake.
