World Series Game One: Philadelphia Phillies Hold Off Tampa Bay Rays to Take Series Lead

Chase Utley went 2-4 with a two-run homer, Jayson Werth was 2-4 with a run scored and Cole Hamels tossed seven innings of five-hit ball while allowing two runs as the Philadelphia Phillies held off the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 on Wednesday night to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven 2008 World Series.

The Phillies jumped on the board in the first inning as Werth took first on a walk and Utley sent a Scott Kazmir delivery over the right field wall for a 2-0 lead. With the blast Utley became the 34th major league player to homer in his first World Series at bat.

That 2-0 lead was extended to 3-0 in the top of the fourth inning after Carlos Ruiz plated Shane Victorino on a fielder’s choice groundout to shortstop.

Tampa finally got on the board in the bottom half of the frame as Carl Crawford hit a two-out solo blast off Hamels and in the fifth they added a second run as Akinori Iwamura doubled home Jason Bartlett with two outs but B.J. Upton fouled out to end the inning and Hamels cruised through the next two innings.

Philadelphia then turned the ball over to their vaunted bullpen and Ryan Madson put the Rays down in order in the eighth and Brad Lidge did the same in the ninth to lock up the win.

For Hamels, the win was his fourth straight in the postseason and his fourth straight game in which he has thrown at least seven innings.

Game two of the World Series will be played on Thursday night with James Shields throwing for the Rays while Brett Myers gets the ball for the Phillies. First pitch is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET.
