Ruth Messinger, former Manhattan Borough President, will join Human Rights First on Sunday, May 8th, in calling for an end to the killings in Darfur. This event will bring together survivors, human rights activists, interfaith leaders, and politicians to educate the public about the situation in Darfur. The event is being coordinated by Not Now Not Ever, a nationwide student-led organization.

The situation in Darfur continues to deteriorate. Since 2003, severe violations of human rights and humanitarian law have been committed in Darfur. Civilians have been victims of mass killings and rape, villages have been burned, and people have been forced to flee for their lives. Estimates indicate a growing death toll of close to 400,000 and more than two million people forced out of their homes. More action is urgently needed. “American public support is essential in making sure that the U.S. government does all it can to end this human rights emergency,” said John Stompor, Senior Associate in the International Justice program at Human Rights First. “This event is a great opportunity for New Yorkers to demonstrate that they will not remain silent about the horrendous situation in Darfur.”

The event is being sponsored by Amcha: Coalition for Jewish Concerns, American Anti-Slavery Group, American Jewish World Service, Amnesty International, Rutgers University Student Group, Anti-Defamation League, GIF, Human Rights First, iAbolish, Union of Reform Judaism, Unitary Universalist Association and Yeshiva University.
