1 Dead in National Guard Helicopter Crash

An Army National Guard helicopter crashed off the coast of Puerto Rico late Monday, killing at least 1 person on board. The UH 72 Lakota was carrying 3 crew members and 3 passengers when it crashed after taking off from San Juan.

San Juan Coast Guard spokesman Ricardo Castrodad said the guard began search and rescue efforts late Monday night. The search is ongoing. It is unclear if any of the passengers and crew have been recovered.

A Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson said the wreckage of the aircraft has been found. The helicopter was completely destroyed. The cause of the accident remains unknown. No other details were released.
