Drake has thanked the power of the internet for making him a megastar.
The ‘Over’ rapper said he’s amazed how his meteoric rise has happened
largely online, and reckons he’s one of the first rappers in the world
to do so.
He explained to internet site Global Grind:"Initially, I was this
rapper with a little bit of buzz, the internet was taking over, and I
didn't know the power of it at that point.
"There wasn't an artist that had been 100 per cent birthed from that
outlet and I think to be discovered on MySpace, how I was found, and
for it to somehow reach Lil Wayne's ears and for him to feel so
confident about it and call me and to release a mixtape on the internet.
“Then, again, to have an album somehow go to number one [in the US] off
a mixtape using the internet as a tool was all amazing because it was
all a first.”
Despite his praise for the internet exposing new artists, the rapper
said he worries the internet is affecting the way people communicate
and making people afraid to express themselves.
He said: “One thing that kills me about my generation is how everyone is afraid to express themselves because of certain people.
"It's become a very impersonal world because we all talk to each other
without looking each other in the face or actually speaking on the
phone so it's become very cruel. It's so easy to be cruel when you
don't have to say it to someone."
