Hu Jia, Chinese Human Rights Activist, Awarded Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought

The European Parliament has awarded the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to Chinese dissident and human rights activist Hu Jia.

Currently serving time in a Chinese prison for speaking out against his government, Hu Jia was called “one of the real defenders of human rights” by European Parliament President Hans-Gert Poettering. He was so labeled for his willingness to document abuses by the Chinese government and alert human rights activists despite the obvious dangers it presented.

Reacting to the news that Hu Jia was awarded the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought the Chinese government called the move “a gross interference in China's domestic affairs.”

China’s ambassador to the EU stated, “Not recognizing China's progress on human rights and insisting on confrontation will only deepen the misunderstanding between the two sides and is not conducive to the promotion of the cause of world human rights.”

Hu Jia is currently serving a three and a half year sentence after being convicted of subversion in April.
