World Series Game Two: Tampa Bay Rays Look to Even Series, Host Philadelphia Phillies Thursday Night

A big game from Chase Utley and an even bigger game by Cole Hamels has given the Philadelphia Phillies a 1-0 lead in their best-of-seven World Series battle with the Tampa Bay but on Thursday Night the Rays could even the series at a game apiece as they host the National League champions at Tropicana Field.

Philadelphia will be going with Brett Myers (10-13 4.55 ERA) on the hill and the hard-throwing righty is coming off a pair of wins in the postseason. Myers looked great in his start against the Milwaukee Brewers in the NLDS, throwing seven strong innings while allowing two hits and two runs, but his last outing against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS was not as impressive despite the win. In that game he went five innings while giving up six hits and five runs.

That’s the type of pitcher Myers has been all year though, unpredictable. He has gone through a five game losing streak and lost eight of nine at one point but has also had a winning streak of four games and won six of seven games at one point. For Myers to be successful on Thursday he’ll have to keep the ball down against the Rays’ bats. Hamels confused Evan Longoria, B.J. Upton and Carlos Pena all night on Wednesday and if Myers doesn’t get up in the zone he could continue their combined 0-12 performance in Game One.

As for the Rays, their going with James Shields (14-8 3.56 ERA) and while he has been dubbed “Big Game James,” the righty has dropped two of three in the American League postseason including his last two starts against the Boston Red Sox. He closed the regular season with five wins in six decisions

Shields will be facing a Phillies lineup that had plenty of opportunities on Wednesday night and while the big bats of Ryan Howard and Pat Burrell went silent Philadelphia did get some production from their two-three hitters as well as their six-seven spots. Shields certainly has the stuff to shutdown a lineup but he can’t afford to give the Phillies the same chances Kazmir allowed in Game One, it’s unlikely the Phillies will leave eleven runners on base again.

Game Two is scheduled to start at 8:00 p.m. ET.
