Second Greek Minister Resigns Due to Land Deal Scandal

Greek Minister of State Theodore Roussopoulos has resigned from his position in government following accusations that he was involved in a contentious land deal that involved an Orthodox monastery.

Roussopoulos announced his resignation shortly after parliament pledged to form a commission that would investigate the deal. That deal traded government land for less desirable land owned by the Vatopedi monastery on Mount Athos.

According to those investigating, the deal cost the government nearly 100 million euros.

Roussopoulos has denied any wrong-doing in the deal and stated his resignation was done so that he could concentrate on defending his name. Last month Merchant Marine Minister Georges Voulgrakis resigned after he was accused of being part of the land deal. He has insisted he is innocent of any charges as well.
