B.J. Upton was 2-4 with an RBI, Jason Bartlett went 2-2 with an RBI and James Shields threw 5 2/3 innings allowing no runs while striking out four as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-2 on Thursday night to even their best-of-seven World Series at 1-1.
After Shields shutdown the Phillies in the top of the first the Rays plated a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame off Philadelphia starter Brett Myers. Akinori Iwamura drew a leadoff walk and Upton followed with a single to left that Jayson Werth kicked to put runners on second and third. Carlos Pena grounded out to second to score Iwamura and move Upton to third and Evan Longoria followed with a groundout to short that brought Upton home.
Philly looked like they had a chance to tie the game in the top of the second as Ryan Howard led off with a double and Pat Burrell walked. Shane Victorino followed with a pop out to third but Howard and Burrell advanced a base on a wild pitch from Shields. The righty then settled in and struck out Greg Dobbs and got Pedro Feliz to line out to center to end the inning.
Tampa then tacked on a run in their side of the second as Upton collected a two-out RBI single that scored Dioner Navarro but the inning ended when Rocco Baldelli tried to score on the play and he was out at the plate.
The Rays put another run on the board in the fourth when Bartlett laid down a safety squeeze to bring home Cliff Floyd and with Shields cruising it looked like Tampa had everything going their way.
Philly finally got on the board in the eighth inning when Eric Bruntlett hit a two-out solo homer off David Price and in the ninth the Phillies looked like they had things set up as Carlos Ruiz opened with a double and Jimmy Rollins appeared to be hit by a pitch but it was called a ball. Rollins later popped out to short and Werth followed with a liner at Longoria that went off his glove and scored Ruiz but Price then got Chase Utley on strikes and Hoard grounded out to second to end the game.
The World Series now shifts to Philadelphia where Game Three will be played on Saturday.
